The semantics of image quality
  DOI :  10.2352/CIC.1997.5.1.art00025  Published OnlineJanuary 1997
Abstract

Using an “information-processing” approachwe give a semantic description of image quality. Experimental evidence for this description, which allows one to meaningfully characterize the quality of an image as the degree to which the image can be successfully exploited by the observer, will be discussed.
