We have been developing an extra-high quality electronic imaging system. The ultimate objective of this system is to reproduce or convey high-order sensations (HOS) invoked by original objects. Some of important HOS are the sense of elegance, refinement, dignity, and profundity. These senses are strongly more related to the reproduction of black and gradient than the reproduction of color. The extra-high quality electronic imaging system is used in dark environment so that very low luminance of black (nearly zero) can be reproduced and observers can concentrate on the displayed images. In this situation, the reproduction of black and gradient is much more important factor than conventional. In this paper, firstly the problem of conventional systems will be discussed. Secondly, how to treat the reproduction of black and gradient in the extra-high quality system will be described. Thirdly, practical experiments using a digital camera and the extra-high quality system will be done.
