        <p>In this paper an original region-based segmentation technique for colour images is presented. This technique is based on the concepts of region growing without seeds and, in postprocessing process, on a small regions removal by region merging. Experimental results of proposed segmentation
 technique are reported. Selected heuristic functions for quantitative evaluation of segmentation results are reviewed. Problems with using evaluation functions for the choice of values of two control parameters are described.</p>
